Save the canal du Midi

As the authority responsible for the management of the Canal du Midi, French Waterways Institution / Voies navigables de France (VNF) is committed to the preservation of arboreal heritage. Since coloured canker was first found in 2006, more than 10,000 plane trees have already been infected by the fungus, which also threatens the 32,000 remaining trees. In an attempt to halt the spread of the disease, VNF has introduced a set of protective measures.

Rebuilding its emblematic arboreal heritage, its complexity, the size of the area affected and its registration over time require a joint, shared project. In terms of long-term action, VNF has also set up a safeguarding program, with which all the stakeholders in the area are associated – the government, the regional and departmental councils, the communes, water supply agencies, environmental groups, etc. not forgetting, of course, the canal lovers.
